From Teachers’ Notes to Textbooks

How AMEF is transforming learning at Asaba Memorial High School.

Asaba Memorial Education Foundation established Asaba Memorial High School, the first and only secondary school in Kiruli Sub-County, Masindi District, bringing hope and education closer to the local community.

When Turn the Page Uganda donated 64 textbooks, it gave students new opportunities to read, revise and learn independently. For AMEF, these books are more than learning materials; they are helping restore hope, build confidence and create pathways to a better future.

Books that support the CBC classroom

“As a Physics and ICT teacher, I would like to thank Turn the Page Uganda for the generous donation of textbooks. These books are aligned with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) recommended by the Ministry of Education and Sports. They will support both teachers and learners by providing useful materials for effective teaching, learning and revision.” Mr. Ayiko Gipson · Physics and ICT Teacher, Asaba Memorial High School

Teachers now have stronger reference materials for planning and instruction, while learners have more room to revisit lessons, prepare for class and strengthen difficult subjects through independent study.

Michael Faith dreams of becoming a journalist not only for herself, but to serve others.

“The first time I held the microphone and stood in front of the camera, I was nervous. Now I feel more confident speaking in front of people. I thank AMEF for giving me the tools and opportunity to practise. I want to use journalism to tell stories that matter, speak for people whose voices are often unheard, advocate for girls’ rights and raise awareness about the challenges faced by refugees.”

Her dream is a reminder that when a young girl finds her voice, she can use it to inspire change far beyond herself.

A young journalist in action

Turning a dream into practical experience.

Michael Faith is a 16-year-old S1 student and the current Head Girl of Asaba Memorial High School. Together with her family, she lives in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in Uganda after being forced to flee the conflict in South Sudan.

Michael dreams of becoming a journalist. At AMHS, she is not only learning about journalism—she is beginning to practise it.

With access to a smartphone and microphone, Michael has started recording, asking questions and practising interviews. One of her most memorable experiences was interviewing the Ugandan Member of Parliament for Buruli County in Masindi District on 17 July 2026. The interview gave her the opportunity to speak directly with a community leader and ask questions with confidence.

“I have always dreamed of becoming a journalist. Before, I was shy when speaking in front of people. Using the microphone and practising interviews has helped me become more confident. Interviewing the Member of Parliament made me believe that my dream is possible.”

For Michael, this is more than a school activity. It is the beginning of her journey towards becoming a journalist.

Creating opportunities for young people

Help more students discover their potential.

AMEF believes children should not have to wait until adulthood to discover their potential. By providing education, leadership opportunities, technology and practical learning experiences, we can help young people turn their dreams into skills and their skills into future careers.

Michael’s story is one example of what becomes possible when a young person is given an opportunity to learn, lead and turn their dreams into reality.

More Than Music

Keeping children in school and building their future.

At AMEF, we believe every child deserves an opportunity to discover their talent, build confidence and develop skills beyond the classroom. This belief inspired the creation of the Brass Band Club at Asaba Memorial High School.

The BBC is becoming more than an extracurricular activity. It is creating a positive, safe space where students can learn, practise, perform and grow together. AMEF provides free brass band training to students and youth, giving them the opportunity to develop their musical talents while remaining actively engaged in school.

Community outreach

The Brass Band and other AMEF community activities are also helping us connect with communities beyond the school. In just three months, AMEF conducted community outreach activities in five communities, reaching more than 3,000 people with information, awareness and community engagement activities.

We need your support

The Brass Band is not yet fully equipped. AMEF needs support to purchase the remaining instruments and pay qualified trainers to strengthen the programme.

“My name is Aheebwa Lilian, I am 15 years old and a student at Asaba Memorial High School. This was my first time to touch, play, and learn a brass band instrument. At first, I did not know how to play it, but through training and practice, I am learning new skills and becoming more confident. I am very happy to have this opportunity to discover my talent. I am grateful to everyone who supported our school with the brass band instruments and training.”

“Before receiving the mosquito nets, many students were not sleeping under mosquito nets, and they were exposed to mosquito bites. Now, through the donation from Think Humanity, all our students and staff are able to sleep under mosquito nets, which has improved their health and protection against malaria.”
